Waterstones in London’s Gower Street hosted a ground-breaking event on 5th November: “Give Birth Like a Feminist – Your Body, Your Baby, Your Choices?”
The panel was made up of Kemi Johnson, Independent Midwife; Rebecca Schiller, co-founder of Birthrights and author of Your No Guilt Pregnancy Plan and Why Human Rights in Childbirth Matter; Dr Emma Svanberg, founder of Make Birth Better and author of Why Birth Trauma Matters; and Milli Hill, founder of the Positive Birth Movement and author of The Positive Birth Book and Give Birth Like a Feminist.
The panel was expertly hosted by Elizabeth Morris, events organiser and curator of the forthcoming Crib Notes Book Club.
The event sold out in less than 24 hours and the Gower Street bookshop was packed to the rafters! As if the atmosphere wasn’t buzzing enough, the audience were given a surprise when US actress, talk show host, and producer of the groundbreaking documentary The Business of Being Born, took the mic and introduced the evening. In town for the current series of Celebrity X-Factor, Ricki had been invited to the event by Milli.
A podcast of the evening’s discussion is coming soon from Crib Notes Book Club. You can find them on instagram or subscribe to their newsletter to stay updated.
And best of all, perhaps, one of the attendees, Rebecca, went into labour that night after the event and had a glorious home birth. We are grateful to her for her permission to share these images.
